Deaf Inspiration Meets Action and Independence in Bataan, Philippines

“Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
–old Chinese Proverb

If you like Filipino noodles and Merienda, then you’re going to love this story.

Talking Hands Ministries gets the opportunity of their lifetimes, as Reverend Mike of Faith Without Wall, Love Without Borders Church, bestows them with a location and starter equipment to launch “their own” neighborhood barangay kitchen, and Coach Kareem Jackson, of KA&CO, gives logos, marketing, graphics design, and The Philippines Magazine International gave advertising.

Entrepreneurship is freedom.

Teaching the youth entrepreneurship, or as the old Chinese proverb encourages, “Teaching Them To Fish…” can be life-changing for the deaf community, in Bataan, as they are among some of the most overlooked and lowest-income communities in the country.

In Bataan, the average entry-level employee can earn, just P500 per 12-hour day, or around P9-12k per month. However, the average small or micro business can gross up to P5,000 a day, or up to P125k a month, while employing and empowering multiple people from the community.

The hard part for any start-up business is securing the location, the tools, the utilities, promotion, marketing, and effective mentorship.

Talking Hands Update:

Sad news. Shortly after announcing their coming resto, robbers broke into the donated location for the deaf community kitchen and stole all of their recently donated kitchen equipment and goods.

What kind of people steal; not only from the church but from the disparaged deaf community?

Not shaken, the community has united and is adding additional security gates and reinforced doors, as well as, taking collections for construction supplies, kitchen equipment, and utensils as they get closer to their holiday grand opening date.

They are truly inspiring.
